Playground gets crushed…limestone, that is.

Recess means a lot of things to different students.  Some love to play on the playground equipment while others like to join in organized group games such as kickball.  But a very large segment of our population loves to dig, play with rocks, build small villages with twigs, stones and other things they find outside.  The problem: the holes were getting just a little too big and the rocks were left in the grass creating mowing challenges.

Just in time for the nice weather!  The dig pit is the brainchild of the lower elementary teachers who found that you just have to choose your battles.  If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.  Thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Meyer, Mr. & Mrs. Fry, Scott Thompson and Larry & Jessica Franck for the labor and materials.

CLS students win American Legion Essay Contest

 

We are pleased to announce that several of our 5th grade students were recognized for the essays they submitted to the American Legion of Iowa Essay Contest, a writing contest designed to foster in elementary students a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the United States Flag.

During chapel four students received certificates and cash prizes for their written pieces.
The Blairstown American Legion Post 170 awarded Cael Kaestner’s essay first place.  He received his certificate from Bruce Feuerbach, Chairman of the essay contest in Benton County and National Executive Committeeman for Iowa.  Cael also received a $30 cash prize.
Timothy Thompson and Joshua Howe were awarded first and second place, respectively, for their essays judged by the Newhall American Legion Post 167.  Doug Anderson was on hand to present them with their certificates and cash prizes.
Kindyl Andrew won third place from the Van Horne American Legion Post 148.  Don Knaack presented her with her certificate.
Special recognition went to Timothy Thompson whose essay also took first place in Benton County and 3rd place in the District!  Vince Barloon, Benton County Commander, presented Timothy with his honors.
This year was the first year that Central Lutheran School fifth graders participated in the contest and the first year that all of the schools in Benton Community participated.  Feuerbach said he had a tough time choosing the winning essays, “They were all so very good.”
